John Lee Comes Full Circle at Clix

Our team is thrilled to announce that John Lee has rejoined the Clix family! John brings a wealth of PPC experience to the table, from account management and strategy to client communication to industry thought leadership and everything in between. If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting John, here’s a little more about one of the PPC industry’s nicest guys. 

 

Q: Tell us about your career journey in PPC – where it started and how it’s evolved over the years. 

LOOOOOONNNGGGGG story. I’ve been at this thing we call PPC for 16 years now. I started as the 3rd employee of a small agency named Hanapin Marketing in 2006. Had the JOY of launching PPCHero.com with Joe, Amber, and Pat. In 2009 I put in some time as the in-house PPC manager for Wordstream. In 2010 I came on board at Clix Marketing the 1st time. In 2011 became co-owner of Clix with a small, but awesome group of people (including the current owner and my friend, Mae). 

In the years between 2011 and 2016, we grew Clix into a strong agency both for our clients and as a voice in the digital advertising industry. The successes were many! In 2016 I was presented with an opportunity to work at Microsoft Advertising as a learning and development specialist. This was too good to be true, so I jumped at the opportunity. Working for Microsoft (and Microsoft Advertising) was amazing – met and worked with some of the most amazing professionals in the world. In late 2020 I became the Head of Evangelism for Microsoft Advertising. As the Head of Evangelism, I was blessed to work with the top professionals in this industry through an influencer community, writing, and speaking. What a cool job. 

What goes around comes around. This year I found myself itching to get back to my roots in account and client management. After a couple of brief, but exciting conversations with Mae here at Clix I was offered the chance to come back as her Chief Operating Officer. And let me tell you, I’m pleased as punch! 😊

Q: What is your favorite thing about the PPC industry?

So many things come to mind here. Let me keep it brief by simply calling out the sense of COMMUNITY within the PPC industry. There are a plethora of amazing people who do amazing work and are not afraid to share their expertise with their peers – #PPCchat is a prime example. 

Q: Do you have a moment in your career you’re most proud of?

Probably the 1st year that Clix Marketing surpassed $1mm in agency revenue. There were a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that brought us to that point. And while there are plenty of bigger, flashier agencies that was a watershed moment cementing a years-long labor of love.

Q: Are there any areas or aspects of PPC you’re particularly drawn to?

I’ll give a 2-part answer here. I’ve always gravitated towards the technical aspects of PPC like tracking, channel integration, etc. That being said, I’m also that guy who will always recommend new features, campaign types and channels to clients. Being on the bleeding edge is exciting and more often than not pays off big for clients. 

Q: What are your favorite types of accounts to work on?

My experience runs the gamut. I’ve been neck-deep in e-commerce, B2C, B2B, you name it. However, B2B has always been my favorite. The bigger the lead gen needs and scale the better. 

Q: What are you looking forward to bringing to the Clix team?

A fresh set of eyes. A sense of humor. A desire to do the best work I can for an amazing set of clients. 

Q: What’s the best piece of career advice you have for new marketers?

Never stop learning. Read. Network. Ask questions. Attend conferences when you can. And most importantly, give back to the community as freely as they have (and will continue to) give to you.

Q: What’s something about you that we’d be surprised to learn?

Since my last go-round at Clix, I’ve acquired 3 tattoos. And I have plans for more. LOL. 

Q: What’s your go-to coffee order?

Venti non-fat flat white. Dang… now I need coffee!

Q: Who inspires you, in life or work?

In no particular order – my mom, my wife, and my 2 kids. They are forever teaching me about perseverance, compassion, and love. Personal skills that often come in quite handy professionally, too.
