Try This Chrome Extension to Test Google Conversion Tracking

We’re big fans of finding Chrome extensions that help improve a PPC marketer’s workflow. In the past, we wrote about using Google’s Tag Assistant extension to test tracking setups.

Today, we’ll cover a more recently released extension that helps you go further in testing Google Ads conversion tracking: Tag Assistant for Conversions.

Tag Assistant for Conversions Overview

Conversion tracking is a crucial piece of any PPC campaign, and the ability to test for a proper configuration comes in handy both at the launch of a campaign and for troubleshooting when issues arise. That’s where this extension comes in handy.

Available in the Chrome Web Store (currently in beta), the Tag Assistant for Conversions extension allows you to validate Google Ads conversions on a step by step level. You can simulate the process of a user navigating through the site and completing a conversion, seeing if an individual conversion is firing properly and getting advice on necessary adjustments.

Using the Extension

Once you’ve installed this extension, you’ll see the icon in your Chrome taskbar. When you click the icon, you’ll see an option to enter Explore mode or Goal mode.

Explore mode will immediately show any tags from Google-related products that are firing on your site. It will also begin tracking the activity you take on the site and the tags that fire for each action and pageview.

At the end of your session, you’ll be able to view a report summarizing all of the related data, with step by step details broken down by page.

Next, Goal mode allows you to test the setup for a specific conversion. Once you select the type of conversion, you can enter the landing page URL and conversion details to begin a test.

Once you click “Start” you’ll see a box in the lower right-hand corner of your browser window. This will provide details for each page, such as showing when your conversion tag fires and flagging any potential tracking setup issues.

You can also click the extension icon in the taskbar at any time to see more details about tags fired on the page, as previously shown in the “Explore” example.

After you submit the form for the associated conversion, the box will show “Conversion found” if the tag fires properly.

You can click “View Report” to look at a more detailed breakdown of activity. This report will show every page viewed, each tag that fired, and flag any potential problems in configuration.

We highly recommend this extension as a user-friendly tool for testing Google Ads conversion tracking configurations. Install it in your Chrome browser and give it a try!
